The Transportation Ministry is planning to auction land near public transportation hubs to developers for building transit-oriented developments (TODs) to increase the number of people using the capital’s public transportation system.
“I hope the developments can make the public transportation system more accessible and in turn attract more people to use public transportation instead of private vehicles,” Budi said in Jakarta on Friday.
TODs are mixed-use urban developments located within walking distance of mass transportation that integrates residential, commercial and entertainment facilities.
Budi said he regretted that the light rail transit (LRT) system had yet to maximize nearby TODs, which prompted the ministry to come up with the auction plan.
“Landowners near public transportation hubs need to take part in the public transportation system,” he said.
“We will start the auction in the near future,” Budi added, without mentioning a possible date.
He also expressed hope that the TODs, particularly in Jakarta, would help increase the number of public transportation users from 25 percent to 60 percent of total people who travel to and within the city.
Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said that 363.9 million passengers in 2019 used Greater Jakarta’s transit services — the Commuter Line train service, the Transjakarta bus service and the MRT Jakarta.
